Beneficiary 1 – University of Athens (UOA)

General Description:  The Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products Chemistry of Faculty of Pharmacy belongs to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UOA) which is the leading and most renowned academic institution in Greece. The main research activities are related to the discovery of novel biologically active natural compounds from plants and microorganisms mainly of the Mediterranean biodiversity. Its expertise covers all the area of extraction, with emphasis to advanced “green” methods, isolation and structure elucidation of natural products using up-to-date NMR techniques and mass spectrometry, profiling and quantitation (NMR & LC-MS).  In the last 10 years, more than 200 scientific articles have been published in high cited peer reviewed journals (Nature Med. Oncogene, Chem.Biol., J Med Chem, J Nat Prod, Phytochemistry, Tetrehedron Lett etc.) and they have been cited in more than 2000 articles. Moreover, the Department has been granted 10 international patents. Nowadays, 6 compounds are commercialized as pharmacological tools by Sigma-Aldrich, Merck, Calbiochem, Alexis etc.
